Education Eagles

"Clay" on left and "Cassie" on right

In September of 2008 the Shelby County Conservation Board was able to acquire the necessary US Fish and Wildlife Service and DNR permits to obtain two Bald Eagles for educational purposes.  The funds for the project were raised through the Nishnabotna Conservation Foundation, the non-profit group for the Shelby and Audubon County Conservation Boards.

Clay is a five year old male that was found in Clay County, Iowa.  He had been shot in his right elbow and almost died of lead poisoning.  When he was found he was brought to SOAR for treatment.  His wing had to be amputated at the elbow.

Cassie is an adult female.  She was found in Cass County, Nebraska.  She had a damaged left wing tip due to a collision (possibly with a train).  Her wing tip also had to be amputated.  She was brought to Raptor Recovery Nebraska for treatment.

Both eagles are behind the nature center at Nishna Bend Recreation Area.  The public can come out and view them at any time.
